This is me

Growing up as part of a sailing family, I always had an appreciation for the plant communities on Catalina island, where I spent many vacations in my youth hiking, sailing, looking for seashells and being grossed out by floating kelp when swimming. As I grew older, seeing the impacts of fires, ocean pollution (straws and balloons) and other flotsam & jetsam washed up on beaches or floating as we sailed over to the Island made it clear to me just how much impact humans have over the natural world, especially on an island.

In college, I had the opportunity to be a part of the LA urban forest tree mapping project, and a field-trip to see Santa Barbara Island (and stay in the UC bunkhouse) there was illuminating in showing me there were many ways I could make a difference. I started to realize that there were a lot of "islands" or isolated ecosystems in the world, even on the mainland or in the oceans.

Sustainability was also a growing interest (so I got a minor in it, which was just established at UCLA at the time) and I was starting to realize it was also a passion that I could extend into many areas of my life; sewing my own clothes and costumes to reduce waste, buying thrifted clothes and altering them, growing as much of my food as was possible/affordable, adopting ideas that encouraged biodiversity (like native landscaping) and encouraged resource saving (especially water).

You could say I went a little green all over.

But the most influential thing that I kept learning over and over was that small changes, stitches in the weave of the tapestry of life, could impact others in a positive way. Whether that was getting friends into food gardening, providing a positive example for students (for many years) in my libraries on ways to be and go green/sustainable, or just talking about native plants with others.

More than ever, as we realize the extent of plastic pollution (microplastics in the ocean, soil, our bodies) more and more people are becoming aware that redesigning our living systems and societal norms is part of the process in making the world a better place. We can no longer support a cradle-to-grave world,; we need systems that foster greater biodiversity and create opportunities for a more creative cradle-to-cradle design and development approach.

Out with the old, in with the lean, grean and sustainably mean approach!
